Arches National Park
We will visit Arches National Park, which contains the world’s largest concentration of natural sandstone arches. Over 2,000 arches are located within the park’s bounties, the park also contains a great variety of other geological formations such as colossal sandstone fins, massive balanced rocks, soaring pinnacles and spires.

We will explore some shorter hikes (0-2 miles) in different parts of the park and also check out some viewpoints.

Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands is the largest national park in Utah, and its diversity staggers the imagination. The park is known for its dramatic desert landscape carved by the Colorado and Green River.

Canyonlands National Park is broken up into two main districts and two smaller districts: Island in the Sky and the Needles District are the largest. Two more districts are far less visited, which includes the Maze District and the Horseshoe Canyon Area. We will be spending most time at the Island in the Sky area, which sits atop a massive 1500-foot mesa, quite literally an Island in the Sky.

We will drive to different viewpoints rival the Grand Canyon where visitors often can see over 100 miles in any given direction, resulting in panoramic views that encompass thousands of square miles of canyon country.

In this park we will also indulge ourself in some shorter hiking trails to amazing viewpoints (0-2 miles).

Capital Reef National Park
Located in south-central Utah in the heart of red rock country, Capitol Reef National Park is a hidden treasure filled with cliffs, canyons, domes, and natural bridges in the Waterpocket Fold, a geologic monocline (a wrinkle on the earth) extending almost 100 miles.

The name “Capitol” is for the white domes of Navajo Sandstone that resemble capitol building domes, and “Reef” for the rocky cliffs which are a barrier to travel, like an ocean reef.

Also, here we will explore some shorter hiking trails (0-2 miles).

We will also see a few historical buildings, the Mormons settled the Fremont River valley in the 1880s and established Junction (later renamed Fruita due to the many fruit orchards), Caineville, and Aldridge. Fruita prospered, Caineville barely survived, and Aldridge died. In addition to farming, lime was extracted from local limestone, and uranium was extracted early in the 20th century.

In each National Park that we visit, we will stop by the Visitor Center where you can use the restroom, buy souvenirs and get more info about the geology and wildlife of the areas that we will visit.

Capitol Reef National Park during sunset hours.

Goblin Valley State Park
We will visit Goblin Valley State Park, which lies within the San Rafael Desert and features thousands of hoodoos, referred to locally as goblins, which are formations of mushroom-shaped rock pinnacles. The distinct shapes of these rocks result from an erosion-resistant layer of rock atop relatively softer sandstone.

Enjoy walking amongst these unusual formations which makes a “strange” colorfully valley often compared to Mars.

Dead Horse Point State Park
Dead Horse Point is located at the end of a mesa 2,000 feet above the Colorado River, on the edge of Canyonlands National Park. The vista offers outstanding views of the river and surrounding Canyonlands National Park.

The park covers 5,362 acres of high desert at an altitude of 5,900 feet. The park got is name from a legend that the mesa was used as a natural corral by cowboys in the 19th century, where horses often died of exposure.

Slot Canyon
Slot canyons are narrow gorges in soft rocks like Utah’s layered sedimentary deposits. They are named for their narrow width, often squeezing down to a sliver. There are more than 1,000 slot canyons in the deserts of Utah, which has the densest collection of slot canyons in the world.

Some of the Slot Canyons are difficult to navigate and require technical skills, but many of them are family friendly and easy for beginners to hike.  We will hike one of the more family friendly ones.

Bridal Veil Falls
We will visit the astonishing 600 ft Bridal Veil Falls. Notice how small the people look at the bottom of the fall.

Midway Hot Spring Crater
We will visit and swim in this geothermal spring, hidden within a 55-foot tall, beehive-shaped limestone cave. The water is 65 feet deep and an average temperature of 95 degrees. We will enjoy a relaxing swim/float in the warm spring water. Everyone has to wear a life west which will be provided. Don’t worry about if you can’t swim, there is an area for non-swimmers to sit and enjoy the waters.
